"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why are they poor, they call me a Communist."
-Dom Hélder Câmara
There are several other variations of this quote which include:
-"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist."
-"When I feed the hungry, they call me a saint. When I ask why people are hungry, they call me a Communist. "
-"When I feed the poor,
they call me a saint,
but when I ask why
the poor are hungry,
they call me a communist."[link]
I have enjoyed this quote for quite some time so figured that I would do a stamp of the quote which was written by Archbishop Hélder Câmara.
Random thoughts while making this stamp is that it reminds me a bit of politics today in America. McCarthy would be so proud. When you feed and are helping the poor, great, no problem, yet when you question why they are poor and what can be done to elevate them from their poverty you get the usual you are a.... “marxist!!!” “socialist!!!!!” “communist!!!!!!” and so on of which, for me, just provokes much laughter since these are often the same people who when asked what either of these means generally cannot tell you what either of the terms mean.
Or my personal favorite is the jumping on the poor as being lazy and in that predicament because they somehow wish to be… oy vey.
Okay, I do not wish to write a ton in this artist comments so I will end it here and go on to do more worthwhile things…
As always comrades,
Let knowledge be that truth, which portrays humanity, condemns malevolence; that respects the differences in others while abandoning the hatred and misconceptions of the past.
