They call me Communist - DHC by AtheosEmanon They call me Communist - DHC by AtheosEmanon
"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why are they poor, they call me a Communist."
-Dom Hélder Câmara

There are several other variations of this quote which include:
-"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist."

-"When I feed the hungry, they call me a saint. When I ask why people are hungry, they call me a Communist. "

-"When I feed the poor,
they call me a saint,
but when I ask why
the poor are hungry,
they call me a communist."

I have enjoyed this quote for quite some time so figured that I would do a stamp of the quote which was written by Archbishop Hélder Câmara.

Random thoughts while making this stamp is that it reminds me a bit of politics today in America. McCarthy would be so proud. When you feed and are helping the poor, great, no problem, yet when you question why they are poor and what can be done to elevate them from their poverty you get the usual you are a.... “marxist!!!” “socialist!!!!!” “communist!!!!!!” and so on of which, for me, just provokes much laughter since these are often the same people who when asked what either of these means generally cannot tell you what either of the terms mean.

Or my personal favorite is the jumping on the poor as being lazy and in that predicament because they somehow wish to be… oy vey.

Okay, I do not wish to write a ton in this artist comments so I will end it here and go on to do more worthwhile things…

As always comrades,
Let knowledge be that truth, which portrays humanity, condemns malevolence; that respects the differences in others while abandoning the hatred and misconceptions of the past.
-Emanon

""When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why are they poor, they call me a Communist."
-Dom Hélder Câmara"

If someone is actually doing that, they would be incorrect. I think we should all ask more often why things are the way they are and what we can do to solve problems - however, it's how you try to go about solving these problems that could make you a Communist, Marxist, Socialist, Capitalist, etc.

America has been a democratic socialist country for over a century, and yet the capitalistic system has only grown stronger. Marxism [extreme views of it] and communism relies too much on the good of man and the lost of the individual.

One can be both a democratic socialist, a Christian socialist and a capitalist. The difference in general is one believes in a completely free market [which we have not had in a century] and others believe in the most basic of safety regulations and so on.

Precisely - a fair balance of each is necessary. For instance, I'd really like more safety regulations, especially in the food industry and the bottled water industry, and so forth. You would think it would be common sense to have those things, but of course they won't do such things unless forced by the government...

While I hate to make this partisan, as you can see by the Republican presidential candidates they want to Abolish the EPA which makes companies adhere to safety regulations regarding clean air, water, and the correct way to dump chemicals. As well as the FDA which makes farmers and companies make sure food has no diseases and so on... this idea that government has no purpose at all makes no sense.

ESPECIALLY, for me, when it comes to education and health care. We are the only industrial nation without universal health care and yet we have 100-150K citizens who die EACH YEAR from a lack of or no medical coverage and the GOP keep saying they want to abolish "obamacare" which is trying to insure uninsured people... it makes no sense to me at all.. but I am just your average liberal, progressive, democratic socialist.

"As well as the FDA which makes farmers and companies make sure food has no diseases and so on... this idea that government has no purpose at all makes no sense."

I actually watched a documentary today - and they said that there was only ONE person who goes to the industries to check up on them. And she rarely, if ever gets to check all of them as many times as they need to be checked. And, the industries get to submit their OWN reports - if all of that is true (I might be misremembering), then it doesn't matter if FDA is abolished, it's not doing it's job properly anyway. Though I would prefer we keep it, but get far more people and a better way of doing things...

I used to hate Obamacare... but then I realized I had no idea what exactly it was (only the various names people called it), so now I have decided that I'm neutral due to the severe lack of information to make a proper decision.

I know for a fact that is a lie, having family members at the FDA, there are hundreds of field agents that go around America and make sure they are adhering to standards set forth by the government. I shall only assume you did not believe 1 woman checks up on the hundreds of American farms and that they pay that they put that 1 woman down as hundreds of employees and field agents in Food, Drugs, Hospitals, Stores, Animal Products, Chemical things and so on.

The FDA itself have thousands of employees, hundreds of field agents.. so unsure where they said 1 woman ,UNLESS you mean Margaret Hamburg who is the ONE WOMAN who is head of the agency but she is not a field agent....

Obamacare basically says
Insurance companies cannot deny people for preexisting conditions
-did you know that they turned one woman away because she was abused by her boyfriend.. he broke bones and they said her previous hospital stay was a preexisting conditions
It allows for kids to stay on their parents insurance, where normally they would get cut off at 18 or 21.. it allows them to stay on until 26 the usual "college years".
It insures 30M Americans who do not have health insurance at all..

I do not know what state you are from, but a few years ago there was a six year old boy dying of cancer and his private insurance company would not approve the surgery... finally that EVIL government stepped in and the surgery was covered under "medicare" and the doctors volunteers their time.. sadly it was months until he got surgery after all of the fighting [though after the government approved his medicare he was in surgery within a week] but because of long wait he died anyway.

for me this idea that it is okay for sick people to not be covered does not sit well with me.. but that is. once again.. your average liberal, progressive, democratic socialism

If you look at my piece "why socialism" I speak of how universal health care AND covering of education to the college level actually benefits the private sector.

That might be right... I'll have to take a look again. The documentary was called "Tapped" and I wasn't able to jot down any notes at the time.

But the money comes from taxes, correct? Well, it probably would, wouldn't it? Though now I have to ask if such a system is proven to actually work... because considering the economic state right now, I for one would be extremely hesitant to try something like that... simply because I don't want anything really bad happening as a result of it's implementation.

I think I heard of that... really sad story.

Right, of course... my two older brothers are currently uninsured; neither make enough money to get insurance (my second eldest brother JUST got a job, though he's still in training). But my eldest brother got this really bad wound, where something pierced the back of his hand and we could see ALL THE WAY TO THE BONE! ...that freaked me out... but because he was uninsured, he couldn't go to the doctors... though I believe he was able to go to the emergency room... I think...

I'll be sure to check it out at some point... I took a "Contemporary Social Problems" class last semester, and my professor mentioned that a lot.

I googled tapped, is that the documentary that says bottled water is bad for people? That is the only documentary that came up so unsure. I have never seen it so unsure. But with respect to 1 woman check up on everything, that is not true.

Yes the money comes from taxes, WHICH IS MORE cost effective. It is one thing to provide universal health care and have a set rate, yet if someone is sick, goes to the emergency room and costs us more money anyway. Universal healthcare or partial universal health care has been in Hawaii for decades, and been in San francisco for a little over a decade, and they are saving millions of dollars a year in medical costs. The idea that it cannot work makes no sense. It actually allows for doctors to see more patients which mean private hospitals will make more money.

So yes, it can work and has worked in MANY countries who are not even as rich as us. We are the only industrial country in the WORLD that does not have universal health care.

Yup, so this idea that private medical companies care about the people .. no they care about the money in the most part. Remember the previous bail outs of the medical companies? What happened? They laid off thousands of workers and pulled major profits after our TAX MONEY bailed them out. Same with the banks..thus you have occupy wall street now.

1/6 of Americans are below the poverty line, 15% of Americans have no health insurance at all with another 15% of people being under-insured. I will show you what I posted to a friend who jokingly called me an Atheist Libertarian..

"I am no libertarian!

I could never be a libertarian for I live in a country where 100-150K people die each year because of a lack of or no medical insurance. I live in a nation where the majority of the bankruptcies are due to medical bills. I live in a now where 1/6 of the citizens live below the poverty level... while a stoic man on most issues, the ideals that use to be the American dream does not sit well with the liberal, progressive, nor the democratic socialist in me. While our leaders bicker over term limits and their precious special interest groups gain the ear to the elected.... the proletarians die waiting for the dream to finally come true to them.

Those who wave the constitution around and say we should do nothing for the 150K Americans that die each year because of a lack of or no medical coverage are in no moral nor any constitutional position to preach anything. Those who say we should not address the fact that a majority of bankruptcies in this country are due to medical bills cannot claim to be economically sound. Those who dare to say that we must continue to beat up on teachers who for the past 30 years have had their budgets continuously cut cannot therefore act surprised that in those 30 years America has went from being in the top 10 of all academic subjects worldwide to now being in the late 20s and early 30s of most academic subjects worldwide. It does no good to wave a constitution when you clearly know nothing of the ideals. This is America, we are supposed to take care of our own... not say well you are on your own ... I got mine so who cares that my fellow citizens are dying and starving... that is not the American way. It was not at the time of our founders, nor is it today. To preach anything other than that shows a constitutional ignorance and lacking any claim of economic, moral, or liberal/liberty superiority."

Universal health care and covering college up to 4 years of college would produce a healthier, smarter and more vibrant middle class and an America that can compete again.
